Periodontist Jobs in Washington

A Periodontist is a dental professional who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. They are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation and in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants. Periodontists employ a variety of procedures such as scaling and root planing or root surface debridement. Key skills for a Periodontist include strong manual dexterity, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with precision.

Before becoming a Periodontist, an individual should be a licensed dentist which requires a Bachelor's degree, passing the Dental Admission Test (DAT), and earning a dental degree (DDS or DMD) from an accredited dental program. After dental school, aspiring Periodontists need to complete a 3-year residency program in periodontics. They are then required to pass a comprehensive exam to become board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology. Prior job roles may include a Dental Hygienist or General Dentist, providing foundational experience in dental care before specialization.
