Position Description :
Columbus Public Health is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Dental Hygienist to join our school-based dental sealant program. As a Dental Hygienist, you will play a critical role in providing dental sealants to children through a mobile setting in school throughout the City of Columbus. Ideally, this position would work Monday thru Friday during the school year, averaging 30 hours per week, and would average about 12 hours per week in the summer. Under general supervision, performs dental hygiene procedures in clinics and outreach programs; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)Applies pit and fissure sealant;
Examines gums for signs of disease or periodontal recessed gums;
Charts conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist;
Instructs patient in oral hygiene procedures;
Removes supra and subgingival calcareous deposits;
Cleans stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums;
Polishes clinical crowns of teeth;
Completes and updates dental records;
Sterilizes and maintains instruments and disinfects surfaces in accordance with the infection control policy;
Maintains equipment and dental operatories;
Makes impressions for casts;
Performs periodontal scaling, closed soft tissue curettage, and root planning;
Applies topical fluorides;
Exposes, processes, and mounts dental radiographs;
Assists dentist as necessary;
May travel to schools and other community settings to provide dental services;
May perform procedures involved in the placement of amalgam, nonmetallic, and direct bonded
restorative materials on teeth, which have been prepared by a dentist;
May communicate with program participants who have limited English language skills . ;
May be assigned to serve as a member of an Incident Command System (ICS) Team, or a similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations. Assignment may include serving as a department and/or community incident commander or on the incident command team.
Possession of a valid State of Ohio license to practice as a dental hygienist.
Some positions may require possession of a valid drivers license.
